D Three Trophy auction: Shariful tops price chart, Taskin and Tanzid cross 2 crore
Bangladesh Cricket Board's domestic D Three Trophy player auction produced a clear price hierarchy: left-arm pacer Shariful Islam topped the list at 2 crore 30 lakh, Taskin Ahmed went for 2 crore 10 lakh, and young opener Tanzid Hasan fetched 2 crore. The figures come from a single-source auction report and remain pending verification. This is not a match report; it is a transactional report on player-market valuation, league commerce and governance. No match, score or performance data is included, so no price should be treated as direct proof of sporting output.
The reported price ladder runs: Shariful Islam 2 crore 30 lakh, Taskin Ahmed 2 crore 10 lakh, Tanzid Hasan 2 crore, Hasan Mahmud and Saif Hassan about 1 crore 95 lakh each, Jaker Ali Anik 1 crore 70 lakh, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das 1 crore 55 lakh each, and Khaled Ahmed 1 crore 50 lakh. The Hasan Mahmud and Saif Hassan figures are derived from the report's references to 5 lakh less than 2 crore and the same price, not from direct standalone figures. Saif Hassan's buying team is not named. The ladder suggests role-fit pricing mattered more than reputation.
The clearest structural signal is that four of the top nine prices are fast bowlers: Shariful, Taskin, Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed. Bangladesh domestic cricket is widely seen as spin-friendly and cutter-friendly, so the auction points to both a scarcity of genuine pace and strong demand for it. Shariful is a left-arm pacer, a rare profile at domestic level, so his top price is logical. Taskin's price reflects his ceiling and experience, although his injury history should have introduced some discount. Khaled Ahmed at 1 crore 50 lakh looks like a pace-panic purchase, because his profile is closer to red-ball and longer-format bowling.
Wicketkeeper-batters also command a distinct premium. Jaker Ali Anik went for 1 crore 70 lakh, and the report itself called the price somewhat unexpected. That very surprise clarifies the market signal: franchises valued a wicketkeeper who can strike late above an established opener such as Litton Das. Litton went to Walton for 1 crore 55 lakh, while former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Fortune for the same 1 crore 55 lakh. That is not a verdict on Shanto's batting ability but on his T20 strike rate and role. A national captain going below three less-experienced profiles can create a status-versus-price awkwardness inside the dressing room.
The local top-order batting pool appears thin. Saif Hassan at about 1 crore 95 lakh and Tanzid at 2 crore suggest franchises were bidding for scarcity and availability more than proven output. Tanzid is young, a left-handed opener and a powerplay aggressor; his price above Litton is the strongest available sign that franchises are modelling T20 impact rather than career reputation. However, the report gives no averages, strike rates, economy rates or recent form. No price can therefore be verified as correct or incorrect on data.
The league has six franchises: Acme, Fortune, Walton, Seven Rings Cement, Citizens Bank and Blue Star. The auction process listed 281 players, with 275 brought into the auction. That is a wide pool for six squads, but a large majority will go unsold because each team can sign only a limited squad. It is a sign of low conversion, not deep talent. Each team was pre-assigned one icon player: Nurul Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain, Naim Sheikh, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Notably, none of the six icons is among the top auction prices. That suggests the icon mechanism was used to distribute marquee names rather than reward the highest-valued players. This is a year-zero competition, so there is no old rivalry, derby equity or inherited fan loyalty.
The auction's most important and confusing element is its points-based model. The report says competition for players is based on points instead of money, and wealthier teams do not get preferential access. Yet the prices are reported in crore and lakh, which are currency denominations. A system that presents itself as separate from money is being reported in monetary value. That raises questions about transparency and commercial governance. Broadcast rights, franchise valuation, the actual player-remuneration mechanism and streaming partners are all absent from the report. Silence on the primary revenue line is itself a risk signal. The points system may be intended to ensure parity, but without published rules it cannot be properly assessed.
The tournament will start next December and will begin with the T20 format. Bangladesh's December window has lower humidity and less dew, which may help the ball grip and slow the surface at night. The league says it will later expand to other formats. If confirmed, prices set purely on T20 roles may look increasingly misaligned once longer formats begin. The December window is also commercially awkward because it collides with the BBL, SA20 and ILT20 calendars. The report names no overseas player, venue, pitch or broadcaster. That suggests the auction was domestic-only and any overseas recruitment, if it exists, is being handled separately. Without overseas players, the league's competitive ceiling cannot be benchmarked against the BPL, ILT20 or SA20.
Overall, the D Three Trophy auction reveals three things about Bangladesh's domestic T20 market. First, pace bowling is the most expensive and contested category. Second, T20 roles such as wicketkeeper-finisher and powerplay batter are being priced above reputation. Third, the league's commercial and contractual structure is not yet fully transparent. Because all figures come from a single source, they should not be treated as final truth. Proper valuation requires independent confirmation of venues, overseas-player rules, broadcast deals, the real remuneration mechanism and performance data. Until then, this is a strong market signal, not a verified valuation.
